Parsi Road in Singapore

By Parinaz Gandhi · December 7, 2017
"This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for us Zoroastrian Parsis to name a station as ‘Parsi Road Station’ in Singapore,” notes a request from Rustom Ghadiali, erstwhile president of the Parsi Zoroastrian Association of Singapore. In response to an advertisement from the Land Transport Authority (LTA) requesting names for three new Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) stations in the southern part of Singapore on the Circle Line 6 (with altogether 33 stations it is expected to be completed by 2025), 2,000 names were proposed and three each were shortlisted for the upcoming stations. The completion of the loop with 12 interchange stations with other MRT lines will enable commuters to travel directly between areas in the west, key employment areas in the Central Business District and upcoming developments in the Marina Bay area.
Parsi Road, Prince Edward Road and Palmer Road are the three names shortlisted for the station that is currently given a working name as Prince Edward station. According to a report on Today online of November 10, 2017 the criteria for shortlisting of names were: easy identification of the location, the history and heritage of the station surroundings, and the multiracial, multicultural character of Singapore. They had determined that stations should not be named after public structures, or commercial and residential developments. The final name will be decided depending on the maximum votes garnered by December 10, 2017.
Requesting all Zoroastrians to support the online vote initiative of the LTA, on www.lta.gov.sg/feedback/OnlineSurvy.aspx?SURVY_DETL_NUM=S201700003, Ghadiali clarified, "We would love to have the station named Parsi Road Station as it is being built on the existing Parsi Road (next to Monetary Authority Building)…As many votes we receive, the better the chance to name Parsi Road Station…Anybody may vote from all over the world. No restrictions. As long as the same person does not vote twice… As many votes we receive, the better the chance to name Parsi Road Station.” The survey initially asks for the respondent’s name, date of birth, address, telephone, email. Against each of the current working names for the three stations, Keppel, Cantonment and Prince Edward, there are three options listed. The respondent is free to indicate his selection only for one station and "No Comment” against the other two stations.

As recounted in The Parsis of Singapore: History, Culture, Cuisine by Suna Kanga and Subina Khaneja, "Parsi Road in Shenton Way is tied to the story of a convict Muncherjee who is said to have become the first Parsi in Singapore to enter recorded history in 1827. When he fell seriously ill, he was befriended by an Armenian, Aristarchus Sarkies, who persuaded the Parsi traders in China to buy a burial place for Zoroastrians in Singapore. Funds were raised and a plot acquired in what is today the prestigious banking area in Shenton Way. In 1848, more land was bought adjacent to it to build a bungalow. The building became a Parsi lodge for transiting traders from China to rest and hold ceremonies. (This bungalow was leveled following the storm of 1903.) Remnants of the burial site on a small clump of a hill still existed on Mount Palmer until the beginning of 2016 when the remaining graves were transferred and the land cleared to build a new MRT station.”
