A samaritan in Hyderabad

By Farrokh Jijina · June 21, 2017
When a Hyundai i20 car "toppled right in front of us due to over speeding, a possible oil slick on the road and also partly due to reckless driving,” a passing convoy of politicians in a government vehicle drove by. It was left to college student Shayan Bisney and a group of his friends to assist.
Bisney and his friends were able to help the victim with prompt assistance from the police, on May 24, 2017, when the 20-year-old student of Symbiosis Law School and six college friends were travelling along the P. V. Narasimha Rao Flyover in Hyderabad. Narrating the incident to Parsiana on May 29, Bisney explained that "the victim asked us to carry on as we were getting late...What sort of citizens would we have been to leave a fellow citizen when crisis level is at its tipping point?” he asks. When asked if he took any selfies of himself and his friends at the accident site, as is a fad currently, Bisney laughed, saying that that was the last thing on their minds.

At 7 a.m. on that day, Bisney was travelling with his friends Nitya Tadakamalla, Anusha Kulkarni, Shivani Srivastava, Bharath Kondaparthy, Rajesh Vaishnav and Sumedh Yashaswi to their college "to help them out with the admission process for the batch of 2022.” The sharp curve towards the end of the 11.6 km flyover which connects downtown Hyderabad with Shamshabad airport was the site of the incident, he details. The driver of the Toyota Innova the students were travelling in hit the brakes and avoided a collision with the Hyundai. They "spontaneously rushed to help the victim in the car... We pulled the victim out of the car... the airbags had opened during the collision making the injuries to the victim minimal.” The students immediately alerted the police of Shamshabad zone by calling the local police station. They got the number of the police station on the ‘Hawk-Eye’ app of the Hyderabad Police. "We also alerted the police by sending an image of the wrecked i20 to the traffic police WhatsApp helpline.
Bisney details that "Not even the policemen of the convoy stopped and offered assistance. In fact, one of the bodyguards slowed his vehicle to take a picture of the wrecked i20,” he states. The do-gooders did however "get an immediate response from both, the police in the Shamshabad zone police station and the ones on the helpline.” The nearest police vehicle arrived within 10 minutes of their call, he adds.
"It was only God who gave the victim a second life or else he would have glared at the doors of heaven with a one way ticket to the departure lounge of God’s airport,” adds the future lawyer.
