Septuagenarian’s strides

By Parinaz Gandhi · May 21, 2017
Seventy-four-year-old Lily Khan (pictured) of Calcutta came second in the 5,000 m run in the 70+ age group at the 38th National Masters Athletics Championship held at the Gachibowli Stadium in Hyderabad from February 21 to 25, 2017. She completed the event in 40 mins, 48 secs. In the 1,500 m run, she stood third, clocking 12 mins, 38.4 seconds.
Representing West Bengal, the veteran athlete was the fifth to complete the 5 km walk. "No certificate is given but a chart is put up at the Stadium,” conveyed the athlete to Parsiana.
Born in Jamnagar, Gujarat, Khan has been participating in national level veteran athletic meets since the age of 45 (see "Small and strong,” Parsiana, October 7, 2013). She has also represented India at international meets in Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Hong Kong. After her retirement from Eveready on completing 58 years in 2000, Khan participates in as many meets as she can comfortably afford. The widow’s son Viraf is settled in Hong Kong with his family.
Unlike her father Jahanbux Kapadia who had won medals in 100 m, 200 m and 400 m run even at the age of 90, Khan finds that she is able to perform better at longer distances.
