Godrej Consumer Products moved up one notch in 2016 to attain fifth place in the listing of India’s best companies to work for, according to a survey conducted by The Economic Times jointly with Great Place to Work Institute and published on July 4, 2016. The report includes brief profiles of the top 10, and thumbnail sketches of those listed from 11 to 50. Vijay Gambhir, managing director of the Godrej entity was quoted as saying that he is creating an organization that’s not just a great place to work, but an inspiring one. "What is core to our DNA is that we are never satisfied with status quo,” he said. With an employee strength of 2,284 and a female-male ratio of 1:12, the company has "initiatives around diversity and inclusion, not just in terms of gender … but also LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) and disability.
Indian Hotels Company, the Tata’s hospitality foray and owner of Taj, Vivanta and Ginger brands weighs in at the 36th place (previous year 32nd) in the list. A Head of Department (HOD) Swap program, aimed at people development, and exposure with accountability at the lowest levels, are listed as key differentiators of this company which employs 16,190 people where every one person in six is female.
At 42nd place is the 1982 founded consumer durables company Eureka Forbes which employs 10,843 people and has a similar female-male ratio as Godrej Consumer Products. The company has a unique program called Phone-A-Friend where sales people can directly connect with a member of the senior management team to discuss challenging customer-related situations.
Forbes Marshall, manufacturer of electrical equipment ranks 49th in the list, down from the ninth place in 2015. The company aims at having a diverse work force and recruits from all geographies. The report states that it was among the first companies to recruit from Kashmir. Here, one in every seventh employee is female. Godrej Properties is listed in the 72nd place and Tata’s Titan Company at 83rd.
The list of 100 was topped by Google India. "It is not just the degrees that get you into Google,” says the write up, but traits looked for include problem solving skills, role related knowledge, speed, leadership and agility.
The report reveals that 791 organizations had applied to be assessed for the 2016 study and that over 155,000 employees were surveyed. Some lessons learnt from the 2016 survey are summarized in the report: the best companies transform challenges into opportunities for differentiation; they have leaders who include building a great workplace among their top three goals; it is a myth that organizations of a certain size or legacy or revenue are great places to work in!
