Anti Udvada Utsav petition

By Sherene vakil · February 7, 2016
An online petition started by Khushnood Viccaji addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi against holding "Parsee Zoroastrian Utsav in Udvada,” and signed by 384 "Concerned Traditional Parsee Zoroastrians,” including Godrej Sachinwalla, Ervad Aspi Rao, Farzad Bulsara and Freddy Mowdawala, mentions that they are "gravely concerned about the Utsav recently held in Udvada and the decision to hold it there every two years.”
Though they are thankful for "the admiration and affection showered by you on the Parsi Zoroastrian community of India as also the support provided to the community by the central and state governments, especially in improving the infrastructure in Udvada, where the holy Iranshah Atash Behram is currently enthroned,” they feel that the Utsav has "severely ravaged the very foundation of Holy Iranshah’s well-being and survival by compromising the seclusion and serenity of Udvada… An influx of over 2,500 persons during the Utsav would have naturally brought with it huge amounts of spiritual and physical pollution, which has been deposited at His doorstep.” This will have a negative effect on Iranshah’s sanctity, the "karmic obligations of which will definitely visit the community in general and the organizers in particular!”

The petition also protests against the "two nights of DJ music, karaoke and a dance program by indecently clad youngsters in close proximity to the fire temple premises” as well as the speech of former advocate general of Maharashtra Darius Khambata advocating "entry into our holy fire temples to all those who had been initiated into the Zoroastrian faith with a navjote ceremony, which is nothing but conversion by the back door… Zoroastrianism forbids conversion.” It also takes exception to Dastur Khurshed Dastoor of Udvada, one of the key organizers of the Utsav, felicitating Khambata and silencing the objectors which "clearly shows that the organizers of the Utsav were actually pushing an agenda of religious reforms, using the Utsav as a convenient platform.”
The petition beseeches Modi to "ensure Iranshah’s sanctity by instructing the organizers to hold further Utsavs at a location other than Udvada” to prevent further spiritual damage to the holy of holies.
