Taking stock
Once the new board of trustees of the Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP) is in position I feel that it is necessary for them to take stock of what happened in the past seven years why it did. They owe it to the community which is puzzled as to how such a venerable body with a glorious track record for integrity was so easily subverted and to ensure that it does not occur again.
When I was a trustee, before the meeting every important item was first examined by the chief executive officer and the concerned department. Thus the trustees had the relevant facts and balanced examination of the issues on hand to take a decision.
The community has a right to know the state of the BPP accounts. Are they regularly audited and approved by the board and submitted to the Charity Commissioner?
How much is spent on legal cases? I am emphasizing this to show future trustees the futility of such litigation which does not cost the sitting trustees a penny. In fact in the priests ban case the mediation was intentionally prolonged as it did not cost the trustees but only the opponent and of course the community. The trustees will also have to take a humane view and remove the ban on Ervads Khushroo Madon and Framroze Mirza from praying in the three places managed by the BPP. JAMSHEED KANGA
