Milestones

By Roxan Driver · October 21, 2015
In order to publish more current Milestones information Parsiana will carry the names of the deceased from the Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP) website bpppaidust.in and of those cremated and/or whose funerary ceremonies were performed at the new Worli Prayer Hall. The names of those cremated are sent to us by Prayer Hall coordinator Ervad Framroze Mirza, by e-mail.
Published in this Milestones column are intercommunity unions solemnized as well as names of Zoroastrians who opted for cremation (at Chandanwadi crematorium) between July and September 2015.
Names of contracting parties marrying out of the community have been culled from the registers seen at the Old Customs House (OCH) at Fort and at Khar. However, those names that could not be identified as Zoroastrian have been deleted.
Two interfaith and one civil marriage were registered both at Khar and OCH respectively.
At the Chandanwadi crematorium nine Zoroastrian bodies were cremated during the three-month period.
The last few names of those deceased in end September 2015 find mention here as well as those who passed away till October 12.
Sixty-five Zoroastrians opted to be consigned to the Bombay Towers of Silence while only eight births were reported for the month of September.
Seventeen deaths were attributed to various diseases of the heart (of whom 14 were octogenarians and nonagenarians). Cancer felled 10. While four patients each succumbed to brain disease and diabetes, three each fell prey to septicemia, pneumonia/lung disease and old age/general debility. Two each were victims of hypertension, cachexia (a state of constitutional disorder, malnutrition and general illhealth) and dengue. Anorexia (loss or deficiency of appetite for food), blood disease, pemphigus vilgaris (skin condition with blister eruptions), intestinal obstruction, status asthamaticus (repeated attacks of asthma without any period of freedom between spasms), septic shock, hypothyroidism (a group of symptoms caused by the deficiency of thyroid secretion), kidney failure, vivax malaria, asthma, ulcer, epilepsy, trigeminal neuralgia (spasms of excruciating pain in the fifth cranial nerve), sepsis and monoplegia (paralysis of only one limb) took the lives of one Zoroastrian each. A one-year-old baby girl, who was the youngest to breathe her last, was a loss to the community. A 30-year-old male succumbed to injuries sustained in a road accident. The oldest to die was a female, well passed her centenary — at 105 years! The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for September 2015 in Bombay was 80 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by one hospital — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
If readers have any births/ marriages/deaths they would like published, some proof to ensure the veracity of the report would be required. We are sure our readers would appreciate this requirement and cooperate with us.

CORRECTION
In the October 7, 2015 Milestones column Parsiana had published the announcement of the demise of Najoo Savak Toddywalla who expired in Malaysia on September 22. Her daughter’s name was mistakenly printed as Rashida K. Selvadury. It should correctly read as Rashida Shavak Todiwalla.
The error is regretted.
