Jiyo Parsi bears fruit
"I am glad to announce that 22 children have been added to the total count of Parsis under the Jiyo Parsi scheme,” union minister of minority affairs Dr Najma Heptulla stated at the Indo-Arab society program at Bombay’s Islam Gymkhana on September 9, 2015. "We are counting every newborn Parsi child. There are just 69,000 Parsis in the country (as per the 2001 census. The figure is close to 60,000 now — editors) and it is very important that the Parsi population is increased,” she added.
Parsis are very close to her heart, the minister told The Times of India (TOI) of September 10. She and her husband would meet them often when she was a resident of Bombay until her move to Delhi a few years ago.
