Speed on skates
Naasha Pithawalla of Bombay’s Malcolm Baug won two gold medals at the 52nd National Roller Skating Championships at Virar in Bombay. The 15-year-old student of Maneckji Cooper Education Trust High School clocked 28.25 secs in the 300 m sprint event, the fastest time recorded by a female skater in India, mentions her father Khushroo in an email. She also won the 500 m race, earning her second gold in the national contest.
Naasha, who wore her first skates at the age of six, has been training professionally since the past six years, writes Khushroo in response to Parsiana’s queries. This year she has won three national gold and three bronze medals and has qualified to represent India at the World Championships in Taiwan in November 2015, pursuing her "goal of becoming a world champion.” The sport of inline speed skating is "poised to enter the Olympic Games in 2020, probably at just the right time for her to get India the first skating gold,” notes Khushroo. As all this would entail much expenditure, Naasha is open to sponsorships or professional contracts from corporates, he writes.
