“Avatar of the age”

It was disturbing to read Dr Nasli Pocha’s peevish letter "Avatar of the age” (Readers’ Forum, Parsiana, April 7, 2015) on the article on Meher Baba (Parsiana, March 7, 2015). The media has a job to do and writes on all manner of people. Politicians of all hues seek the blessings of godmen, conmen, soothsayers and astrologers. Celebrities lavish praise on such self-seeking shammers, thereby glamorizing them.
Over 50 years ago my late father admonished me never to believe in Meher Baba. "Why not?” I asked. His response was: "Your grandfather had made the Baba cry. What powers can be attributed to such an average human being?” I never got involved, for when in doubt, desist.
In an age of extreme religious intolerance, where churches are being burnt and destroyed, where mosques in the Middle East are destroyed by rival Islamic groups, where godmen are exposed as frauds ever so often, Pocha’s relative intolerance is inconsequential for controversial individuals of all persuasions need to be written about.
That Meher Baba was a Zoroastrian Irani is immaterial. No further clarification by the editor is required, considering his most explanatory comment on a community futilely finding solace by looking elsewhere. RASHID G. KHOSRAVI
