Noise over navjote
The trustees of the Mandvi Mangrol Taluka Zarthosti Anjuman Fund have strongly refuted claims that an 18-year-old Adivasi girl, Ankita Babubhai Bhoya had her navjote performed on September 14, 2014 at Balda village, near Mandvi district in Surat. Allegations surfaced that the navjote was performed by Ervads Pervez Mandviwala and Kershasp Karanjia, the former being trustee of the Mandvi Anjuman and the latter panthaky of the agiary in Vyara. The marriage of the young girl was reportedly scheduled for October 28, 2014, to be performed by the same two priests with the dharamshala hall in Mandvi booked for the occasion.
In an email dated September 29 Mandviwala strongly refuted the charge. He wrote that he has not visited Balda for over a decade, has never seen any girl named Ankita or even performed any navjote anywhere for many years. It is Mandviwala’s apprehension that the people spreading this canard are doing so to prevent the Mandvi anjuman from collecting funds for repairs, restoration and to make them self-sufficient (see "Funds for dharamshala,” page 10). In fact on the date of the purported navjote, September 14, Mandviwala and his co-trustee Darayes Gandhi were in Bombay attending the meeting of the Federation of the Parsi Zoroastrian Anjumans of India, and there are many witnesses to attest to the fact.
It was alleged that the girl’s mother’s name is Zarin and Ankita has an older sister Kainaaz who is married to one Farzan Pesi Patel, a chasniwala at a Bombay atash behram.
