Nariman nominated

By Sherene Vakil · June 7, 2014
Among the four names recommended by the collegium headed by Chief Justice of India Justice R. M. Lodha to the government for elevation to the bench of the Supreme Court (SC) of India are those of Rohinton Fali Nariman and Gopal Subramaniam, both former solicitors general of India. The nominations are yet to be ratified by the government though all other formalities have been completed.
Rohinton Nariman: judgeship in offing

What makes these nominations unusual is that though the Constitution of the country provides for three categories of persons to be appointed as judges of the SC — high court judges, lawyers and academics — of the 201 appointments made since 1950, all but four were high court judges. No two appointments in any other category were made at the same time, which makes this "unprecedented,” reported The Times of India (TOI) on May 14, 2014.
Nariman, now 58, was just 36 when he was designated senior counsel by the SC. He succeeded Subramaniam, 56, as solicitor general of India but soon resigned as he was unhappy with the functioning of the law ministry, mentions TOI. According to that newspaper, four years ago TOI "had included Nariman, who does not like to bask in the reflected glory of his father and eminent constitutional expert Fali S. Nariman, among the top 10 lawyers in the SC along with his father.”
