Historic missive
"I met with South African Mr Ghandhi (sic) last summer. I found him an extremely interesting and a sincere man... He simply worships you. I had a very long talk with him about the organization of the agitation in South Africa and all he said about it was that they had your example before them and they were following it with perfect faith.” Dinyar Patel, a PhD candidate in the Department of History at Harvard University sent Parsiana the transcript of a letter written to Dadabhai Naoroji by his granddaughter Gosi Captain, remarking on her meeting with Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in England in 1909. The letter was written on April 7, 1910 from Bexhill-on-Sea, England where she was studying.
Captain also enlists her grandfather’s support in clearing up a misunderstanding with her mother. As a result of "some stupid remark made by someone” her mother had written to her to "come back” immediately, though she planned to do so after her examination in June. She mentioned that she had written to explain that "it was foolish to expect me to come back (at that time). To make me waste my many years work just for not waiting for three months.” The granddaugher requests Naoroji to "kindly explain this matter to the other relatives so that Mother will not in future be annoyed on my account.”
Writing in a very affectionate manner, Captain shares the news that she had "met here a Dr Dordi who belongs to our family. I think his father’s name is Behramji. He is a very nice man and did very well in his Doublin (sic) FRCS (Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons). He said he used to write to you and is very anxious to meet you so he will call on you.” She also informs Naoroji that he will be glad to learn that "Jal (her brother) has passed his final and has been called to the bar.”
