“Definition of poor Parsi”

In reply to Roda Hakim’s letter ("Definition of poor Parsi,” Readers’ Forum, Parsiana, July 21, 2012) the editors have reiterated the explanation given by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP) that the stipulated family income of Rs 90,000 per month applies to persons wishing to avail of ownership flats.
The BPP’s explanation did not receive the same degree of national publicity as the front page news in The Times of India of June 14, 2012 that the definition of a poor Parsi is one earning (allegedly) less than Rs 90,000. I, in Holland, have also been questioned on the issue and, as Hakim fears, the unfortunate episode has made a laughing stock of Parsis.
A candidate with an income less than Rs 90,000 who was refused ownership accommodation by the BPP filed an affidavit in the Bombay High Court which led to this regrettable and clumsy statement by the BPP.
A small and relatively well-off community that is often a source of envy must consciously avoid adverse publicity. As its representatives, the office bearers and spokesmen of the BPP should exercise prudence when going public. Community members too must try to refrain from public litigations that puts the community in a bad light.
