25th Navroz at Parsi Ward

The 45 underprivileged inmates of the J. J. Hospital Parsi Ward were feted by about 100 members of the community on the occasion of Jamshedi Navroz, March 21, 2012. Those patients who had passed away during the previous year were remembered at the jashan while a tandarosti was prayed for all the current ones. A humbandagi followed, with the oldest inmate, Jamshed Irani, handing over ashodad to the priests, notes a write-up on the event received by Parsiana.
Bombay Parsi Punchayet trustee Arnavaz Mistry, who has been involved with this institution for many years, informed all present that this was the 25th uninterrupted anniversary of the jashan at the Ward, and that she had been associated with it for as many years. It was at the Parsi Ward that she developed a "spiritual bond” with the social work that she has been doing. The Ward is the only place in Bombay where bedridden, physically and mentally challenged community members are accepted and taken care of till the end of their lives, without any charge.

Dr T. P. Lahane, dean of the J. J. Group of Hospitals felt that other communities in India should emulate the generosity that Parsis have in large measure, the write-up mentions. Dr Rekha Davar (wife of Dr Gustad Davar, former dean of J. J. Group of Hospitals, now with Hinduja Hospital) said she has observed the community closely and admired their honesty and integrity. Zarin Havewala, long time associate, appreciated Mistry’s dedication and devotion.
Shiraz Guard of the Young Rathestars, Ratamai Peer, Jini Daruwala, Adil Mistry and Jaloo Behramfram of the Lions Club of Cuffe Parade also spoke on the occasion, with Yasmin Mistry commenting on her mother’s contribution with "we are all very proud of you.” Arnavaz acknowledged that this work would not have been possible without the unstinted help and support from Sir Jamsetji Jejeebhoy, the dean, doctors, nurses, Aspi Parekh and the staff of the Ward whose contribution makes the lives of the residents as comfortable as possible.
The celebrations wound up with the serving of snacks and falooda.
