‘Punny’ Parsi films
In his column titled "Heat and Dustoor” which appeared in The Indian Express of October 21, 2011, filmmaker Fahad Samar waxes eloquent on a number of "punny” Parsi films that will never see the light of day. As a self-confessed punster (a species which, according to him has, from the days of Shakespeare, "always got a bit of a bad rap from sniffy litterateurs like Samuel Johnson who famously derided punning as the lowest form of humor”), Samar is relieved that "one can find a few good men and women who are not intimidated by the pun’s dodgy reputation and exult in unabashedly indulging in some frisky wordplay.”
Which is why he was delighted when invited to join a chat group of eminent media professionals who were compiling a list of "Parsi films that never made it to the silver screen.” Foremost among these was Indus Creed band member Zubin Balaporia who offered a basket of takeoffs from Shakespearean titles: Much Bhonu About Nothing, The Taming of Kekashroo, Rumi and Juliet and Two Gentlemen of Udvada. Other gems suggested by Balaporia were: Moby Dikra, The Towering Inferno of Silence, Quantum of Soli and Indiana Jones and the Fire Temple of Doom.
"A bunch of gainfully employed professionals” joined the punfest with photographer Farrokh Chothia suggesting Cama Sutra, music director Shiv Mathur composing the Rhyme of the Ancient Nariman, adman Subir Chatterjee warning I Know Wadia Did Last Summer and They Shoot Hosi’s, Don’t They? Sound engineer Rajiv Kenkre added Guns of Navroze and Where Vultures Dare, while market research guru Sarang Panchal came up with Homi Alone and Samar himself suggested Anaita at the Opera and Robinson Cusrow while ad filmmaker Arjun Mukerjee urged people to see Manekshaw Shank Redemption. The merriment grew with the addition of zany titles like Parzan of the Apes, Heat and Dustoor, How Green was my Salli, Who Rogered Framji Petit?, Saving Rayo’s Privates, Kersiblanca, Parsipolis, Cinema Parizado and Murder by Dikri.
While welcoming contributions from readers to enhance the collection Samar appends this rider: "Just in case anybody is offended by this list, feel free to refer the matter directly to the Parsi Punchayet.”
E-mails doing the rounds on the Internet have thrown up some more titillating titles. Here’s a sampling: Lagaanu, A Bridge too Farrokh, The Battle of the Balsaras, The Mehroo Wives of Windsor, Kasti-way, When Homi Met Salli, Where Eagles Darius, Bend it Like Baman, One Flew Over Cusrow Baug and Pearl Harborwalla. Will the list encompass The Good, the KekoBad and the Dagli?
