“Mesdames mobedyars”

I refer to the article "Mesdames mobedyars” (Parsiana, May 21, 2011). It is heartening to hear of this step being taken in a place like Iran and more creditable still to know that educated women have actually volunteered for the job. May they succeed in their endeavor and come to no harm.
But to introduce women priests in Bombay would, in my opinion, be disastrous. Let me make it clear that I am a great believer in equality of the sexes. In fact in my letter ("Daughters save the day,” Readers’ Forum, Parsiana, January 21, 2011), I emphasized this. My reasons for feeling this way are entirely different. If I should voice them I am sure members of my own sex would eat me alive!
However, from a different angle and a very practical one at that, it may just work out. Our agiaries and atash behrams will thrive. Over the years attendance at our fire temples has dwindled. With women priests, more Zoroastrians will start going there — the men to ogle, their wives to keep an eye on them and children accompanying their parents. The pay scale of our poor priests will increase substantially — for who can argue with a woman! So, all in all, our purpose will be served.
