“Honor comes first”

Fali S. Nariman, Supreme Court (SC) senior advocate and constitutional expert has endorsed the stand taken by retired SC Judge V. R. Krishna Iyer in the controversy surrounding the wealth amassed by former Chief Justice of India K. G. Bala­krish­nan’s family, as per a report in The Indian Express of January 3, 2011. Iyer had asked for a judicial probe into the disproportionate assets of Balakrish­nan’s son-in-law P. V. Sreenijan and others.

Nariman’s letter to Iyer, as reproduced by the newspaper, notes: "Your prompt and pithily devastating remarks on the conduct of National Human Rights Commission chairman K. G. Balakrishnan deserves several rounds of applause. We all are deeply beholden to you for always reminding judges, past and present, that honor comes first.”
