Meaningful meals

Dhansak, akuri, sali boti and patra ni machhi feature on the menu alongside rolls, burgers, salads and baked items at By The Way, the multi-cuisine restaurant run by the Seva Sadan Society at its Gamdevi premises. Launched about eight years ago as a self-sufficiency initiative for women inmates of the home which the trust runs, the project makes every member feel independent and useful, trust president Guddi Advani informed Daily News and Analysis (DNA) of July 6, 2010. The women earn and learn, picking up skills in courtesy and hospitality which will help open up opportunities for them outside as well, Advani told DNA.

By The Way at Gamdevi: self-sufficiency initiative

Started in 1908 by Behramji Malabari and Divan Dayaram Gidumal, the Seva Sadan Society was set up to work for the betterment of underprivileged women and widows. This it does by providing education and vocational training at its own Marathi and English medium schools. It also runs an orphanage, a home for women, teacher training college and offers vocational courses in various disciplines, DNA notes. When plans for setting up the restaurant were drawn up, the trust premises were renovated using funds provided by a generous benefactor.
By The Way is managed by Dolly T. Pavri who has worked with the Oberoi group, and her six helpers. Patrons enjoy the tasty, authentic and generously proportioned meals in comfortable, homely environs, looked after by a helpful Pavri. Prices are reasonable and, most meaningfully, the proceeds are plowed back into the charity that runs the restaurant.
