Powering ahead

"I started training seriously for powerlifting in 2005, though I have been working out since 2003 when I was in college,” says 24-year-old Meherzad Chinoy who has participated and won at local, state and national level powerlifting contests. A few weeks after the Rustom Baug event, Chinoy achieved a personal landmark when he lifted 170 kg (Bench Press) at the Mumbai Mahapour Maharashtra State Level Bench Press - Powerlifting Championship at the Shahaji Raje Sport Complex, Andheri from March 9-11, 2010, winning a gold medal. "This has been my best competition so far,” he says. At the J. R. D. Tata Sports Complex in Jamshedpur on March 17, he stood third in the Senior (90 kg) category at the National Bench Press Powerlifting Championships organized by the Indian Powerlifting Federation. At the Greater Bombay Powerlifting Association contest in February, he had secured first place.
