Celebrating Chinoy’s life

Prof Niloufer J. Chinoy, daughter of the late Prof Jamshed­ji J. Chinoy, an eminent plant phy­siologist, passed away on May 8, 2006. On October 17, 2009 this very remarkable lady would have been 70 years old.
Chinoy, an excellent teacher, researcher and mentor, was director of Biological Sciences, University of Gujarat, Ahme­dabad. She achieved great heights in her profession through her more than 300 research publications, 10 textbooks, and supervision of 42 PhD, 36 MPhil and 50 MSc students. She was on the editorial board of nine national and international journals, earned several research grants, and was an inspiration to her students.

During her 40-year professional career, Chinoy collected no less than 33 national and international awards and gold medals. She won the Outstanding Parsee of Ahmeda­bad medal in 1982 and was honored by the Federation of Parsi Zoroastrian Anjumans of India for Excellence in Science Education and Technology in 1994 and again in 1997. Through her international reputation Chinoy was elected President of the International Society for Fluoride Research in 2005 and an award for the best scientific paper was established in her name, the second Indian lady to be so honored.
Chinoy’s family, friends and students celebrate her life on the occasion of her 70th birth anniversary and remember her as a tender, caring and loving person. We shall always be immensely proud of her.
