Healthy surplus for SPP

The corpus of the Surat Parsi Panchayat (SPP) Funds and Properties has risen by over Rs 20 million in the last financial year. Starting the financial year April 1, 2007 with a corpus of Rs 123,181,914, the year ended March 31, 2008 showed a balance of Rs 143,527,168. The detailed accounts of the parent body and the institutions it controls were forwarded to Parsiana by Panchayat president Darayas Master. Their accounts are also available for verification at 14 other community establishments in Surat.
During the year the SPP showed an income of Rs 29,447,848, the yield from investments showing Rs 11,103,911. Whilst donations from public trusts amounted to Rs 161,482, donations from individuals totaled Rs 1,248,466, with an additional Rs 298,911 being grants earmarked for flood relief. Among the items of expenditure, the largest head is education, Rs 13,315,358, followed by medical relief Rs 1,695,910 and relief of poverty Rs 1,080,152. With its immovable property valued at Rs 47,878,425, the SPP earned Rs 1,260,905 as rent and income from land. An amount of Rs 324,183 was incurred on repairs and maintenance. The environmentalists within the community would be gladdened to read that the SPP showed Rs 182,909 as garden expenses.
Among the educational institutions managed by the SPP the Surat Parsi Boys Orphanage and Properties has the largest corpus of Rs 20,978,604, rising from Rs 12,632,097 in the previous year. The income for the year was Rs 2,759,252, with Rs 1,596,689 being incurred on education. Within education, the maximum, Rs 841,177 is spent on diet, followed by Rs 171,441 on entertainment and Rs 121,024 being the honorarium paid during the year.
The Nariman Girls Orphanage showed an increase in corpus from Rs 12,005,868 to Rs 12,301,012. With its annual income totaling Rs 3,578,024, it spent Rs 2,451,721 on education of which diet accounted for Rs 1,408,741, salaries, Rs 294,118, and school fees and tuition fees together totaled Rs 283,052.
Among the educational institutions run by the SPP, the one with the largest immovable property, valued at Rs 4,848,616, is the Bai P. M. Patel Singanporewala English School. Its corpus which stood at Rs 2,310,659 last year rose to Rs 4,198,903 in March 2008. With its annual income being Rs 4,050,400, under the head of educational expenses the three largest items were salaries, Rs 674,000, dearness allowance, Rs 261,040 and provident fund, Rs 118,093.
The Seth Sorabji Nauserwanji Parukh Polytechnic Institute showed an increase in corpus from Rs 109,444 to Rs 509,444. From its annual income amounting to Rs 606,882, it incurred Rs 45,225 on education. The corpus of the Seth K. H. Alpaiwala Industrial Institute for Women and Girls too showed an increase in corpus from Rs 112,125 to Rs 145,255. During the year it showed an income of Rs 128,970, with Rs 75,622 being received as donations from public trusts and Rs 20,000 from individuals. It spent Rs 53,130 on education.
Looking after the old and ailing are three institutions in Surat with the Nariman Home and Infirmary showing the largest corpus of Rs 47,673,319, an increase from Rs 41,007,029 last year. With an income of Rs 5,530,980, its largest expenditure is on diet, Rs 848,135, followed by salaries, Rs 479,275, and laundry charges, Rs 284,756. The Seth R. D. Tarachand Surat Parsi General Hospital has built up a corpus of Rs 43,533,212 as compared to Rs 33,282,428 in the previous year. The income during the year was Rs 4,149,319. Of the Rs 1,990,632 spent on medical relief, salaries and honorarium accounted for Rs 709,243 and Rs 321,200 respectively. Committee expenses alone accounted for Rs 302,379. Diet expenses and medicine expenses came lower at Rs 180,669 and Rs 169,415 respectively. Bai G. N. Mehta Parsi Maternity Hospital has a corpus of Rs 507,370 and showed an income of Rs 293,455 in the last financial year. Medi-cal relief was its main item of expenditure, Rs 95,642, of which Rs 38,424 was spent on medicine and Rs 35,544 on honorarium.
Two other trusts also contributing towards medical relief are the Sorabji Burjorji Dastur Darab Pahalana Trust whose corpus increased from Rs 1,636,456 to Rs 1,651,707, and The Dastur Darab Pahlana Trust Fund, from Rs 1,086,673 to Rs 1,190,595. From its annual income of Rs 155,959, the Sorabji Burjorji Dastur Darab Pahalana Trust spent Rs 19,000 on medical relief, Rs 22,080 on relief of poverty, Rs 54,000 on educational aid and Rs 20,000 towards marriage expenses. The Dastur Darab Pahlana Trust Fund showed an annual income of Rs 108,626 and incurred Rs 25,450 on medical relief, Rs 19,150 on relief of poverty and Rs 14,000 on marriage help.
The corpus of the First Dastur Meherji Rana Trust Fund increased from Rs 1,050,484 to Rs 1,098,336. Showing an annual income of Rs 110,178, its highest expenditure was on education, Rs 60,335, followed by Rs 9,000 on relief of poverty.
