Milestones

The last 15 days of September 2006 witnessed 27 deaths and four births. The usual major killer — heart disease — claimed five victims, one of whom was in her 80s. The other killers were: pneumonia/lung disease and old age/general debility (four each), cancer (three) and hypertension and brain disease (two each). The youngest to die was a 42-year-old female compared to the eldest, a 93-year-old male. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the last 15 days of September 2006, in Bombay, was 77 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju-mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju-mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the breakup of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
