Milestones

Twenty-three deaths versus four births were recorded in the last 15 days of July. The death list is sent to Parsiana by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet whereas births are sourced from the B. D. Petit Parsee General and Breach Candy Hospitals. The causes of deaths recorded were: heart disease (seven patients of whom five were in the above 80 age bracket), pneumonia/lung disease (six), cancer (four) and old age/general debility (two). The four isolated deaths were caused by septicemia, brain disease, diabetes and kyphoscoliosis (excessive curvature of the dorsal spine). The age range fluctuated between 52 and 99 years. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for July 15-30, 2006, in Bombay, was 79 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the breakup of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
