Woe begone

Barely five months after the alleged killing of her husband Adi Cursetji (see "Sins of commission,” Events and Personalities, Parsiana, June 2003) came the news that Mehroo Cursetji passed away on October 19, 2003. The ailing lady had reportedly been kept in the dark while the perpetrators of the crime whisked off her husband on May 20 to the Worli residence of Geeta Soni, purportedly his ‘adopted’ daughter who had an eye on the issueless couple’s property.

Even before the lady could pay her last respects at Doongerwadi, his body was hurriedly consigned to the dakhma, only to be retrieved later when a police complaint necessitated further investigation.

There being several partners in the crime as per the news reports, there is no knowing whether all the guilty have been meted fair justice. But since one of those implicated was a priest Ervad Behram Dordi, the editorial in the Zoroastrian Studies newsletter Ushta has denounced the Parsi community for spreading rumors against a priest whom they feel deserves to be respected.
