Remembering Shroff

Nariman Bejanji Shroff, aged 95, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2003 at a private nursing home in York, UK. He was the husband of the late (1997) Katy Shroff and father of Dini, Freni and Rusi Shroff.
Nariman was an architect and a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects. He lived and practised in India, Singapore and Zambia before retiring to York with his wife in 1980. In India he was the chief architect to the Indian Railways and was responsible for the design of several railway buildings including the New Delhi, Jaipur and Udaipur stations and the Churchgate terminus in Bombay. He was also responsible for the design of the Indian Railway Centenary Exhibition in New Delhi in 1953, which has since become a permanent exhibition ground. He went to Singapore in 1962 as head of the Department of Architecture and Building at the Polytechnic. He then moved on to Zambia and founded the Zambian Standards Institute before retiring at the age of 70.
While in New Delhi he was president of the Delhi Parsi Anjuman, 1959 to 1960. The greatness of the man is not in mere "Parsi activities” but the depth and breadthh of his contribution in his profession — that of an architect —in India and abroad. Nariman and Katy were both active members of the Parsi community.
Lt Gen A. M. SETHNA
