Honor for Mirza

When pioneering prosthodontist Dr Firoze Mirza (pictured) was honored at the golden jubilee conference of the Indian Prosthodontic Society (IPS) in Delhi, held from November 10 to 13, 2022, the 2,000 delegates present gave him a standing ovation. The Golden Air Turbine award studded with Art Diamonds, a citation and a shawl were presented to Mirza by Dr Mahesh Sharma and Padma Shri awardee Dr V. Rangarajan, president of the IPS, notes a write-up received by Parsiana. Mirza, now 90 years old, was the first dental surgeon to do dental implants in India in 1962.
The genesis of the IPS was in 1972 when Mirza, along with two professors, formed an ad hoc committee after a prosthodontics workshop in Bombay organized by the Dental Council of India, New Delhi. The following year the All India Prosthodontic Society was formed in Ahmedabad by seven founder members. This then became the IPS which today with 2,800 active members is deemed the largest dental specialty association in the world, the write-up states.
Worldwide, prosthodontics forms 60% of general practice. It deals with permanent dental fixtures in the jawbone as well as removable dental replacements involving both hard and soft tissues in the jaw. The note adds, dental implants practice is only part of prosthodontics and today implants are done even for cancer patients. S. V.
