Tata at PM-CARES

By Farrokh Jijina · October 7-October 20, 2022
Industrialist and chairman emeritus of Tata Sons and chairman of the Tata Trusts, Ratan Tata has joined union home minister Amit Shah and union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman as trustee in PM-CARES, the Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund. Joining him as trustees are former Supreme Court judge K. T. Thomas and former deputy speaker of the Lok Sabha Kariya Munda. Former comptroller and auditor general Rajiv Mehrishi, former Infosys Foundation chairperson Sudha Murty and co-founder of Teach India Anand Shah were nominated as members of the advisory board of the Fund.
The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) announced on September 21, 2022 that "the participation of the trustees and advisors will provide wider perspective to the functioning of the PM-CARES Fund.”
The Fund was launched at the start of the coronavirus pandemic and registered on March 27, 2020.
Reports have shown that the Fund has received hundreds of crores from banks, financial institutions, public sector firms and the armed forces, noted the Scroll.in website.
However, the Fund has been the subject of criticism from opposition parties who have raised questions about its transparency and the need to create this reserve when the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund was already in existence.
In December 2020, the Centre had said in a reply to a Right to Information (RTI) application that the Fund was "owned and established” by the government. The government, however, said that PM-CARES does not come under the RTI Act because it receives funds from private sources.
