Fate of the fire temples
The wealthiest Parsis are still located east of the Suez Canal. The maximum number of charities still emanate from there and are utilized in Asia. In contrast, Australia, New Zealand, western Europe and North America have good social welfare systems which may not warrant massive religious charities.
The highest percentage of professionals in the total Parsi population lives west of Suez. Two major migrations of Zoroastrians took place: one after the fall of the Shah of Iran in 1979 and the second during the decade-long term of Gen Zia-ul-Haq as President of Pakistan from 1978 to 1988, because he introduced the Sharia law.
The wave of Parsi migration to Canada from India began in the mid-1950s to the ’80s. Even today Canada’s liberal immigration policy attracts Parsis from the subcontinent.
A major worry, in both India and Pakistan, is about the occupation and management of Parsi owned properties in the subcontinent and the ultimate fate of our fire temples (which cannot be leased out)! A part of the solution would be to re-locate the fires, as was done in the case of the Aden fire at Lonavala, ignoring the fanatics who oppose this.
It has been emphatically predicted in the Bundahishn that Zoroastrianism will not die out from the face of the earth. Amen! B. T. DASTUR
