Pfizer’s Parsi connect
The community is familiar with the Dr Cyrus Poonawalla founded Serum Institute of India’s herculean efforts to manufacture the much awaited Covid-19 vaccine for AstraZeneca-Oxford. Many though may not be aware that the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer which has launched its vaccine in collaboration with BioNTech also has a Parsi connect.
On the Pfizer team in New York is executive director Dr Khushroo Shroff (pictured) who was senior director at Pfizer for 13 years before he became executive director in 2017, as per details available on LinkedIn. Prior to that he had worked as director at Wyeth Vaccines Research. Having studied at the University of Pennsylvania, Shroff had done his post-doctoral research on mucosal immunology, according to information available on bearsofficialsstore.com that has a data base of US employees. Shroff’s skills have been listed as "pharmaceutical industry, vaccines, laboratory information management system, immunology, good manufacturing practice, life sciences, research, standard operating procedure, technology transfer.” Parsiana’s repeated attempts to reach Shroff directly and indirectly were not successful.
"Every day, Pfizer colleagues work across developed and emerging markets to advance wellness, prevention, treatments and cures that challenge the most feared diseases of our time. Consistent with our responsibility as one of the world’s premier innovative biopharmaceutical companies, we collaborate with health care providers, governments and local communities to
support and expand access to reliable, affordable health care around the world. For more than 150 years, we have worked to make a difference for all who rely on us,” notes their website pfizer.com. In early December, Pfizer-BioiNTech’s Covid-19 vaccine was approved for emergency use in Britain, followed by Bahrain, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Mexico and USA until December 13. It is now awaiting authorization in India. While the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine has reported 95% success in the third phase of clinical trials, its storage requirement of -70°C may prove an "icebox challenge” fear those in developing countries that lack such infrastructure.
