To the exalted seat

By Parinaz Gandhi · July 7-July 20, 2020
Cawas Mody received 393,975 votes, which was 54% of the vote, to defeat his rival Roberta Winston to secure a berth as judge of the San Diego Superior Court at the elections held on March 3, 2020. The Superior Court of San Diego county with its 135 judges is one of the 58 Superior Courts in California (see "For the exalted seat,” Zoroastrians Abroad, Parsiana, February 21, 2020).
"I will remain as a deputy district attorney in the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office’s Family Protection Division until my swearing in January 2021,” stated Mody in response to Parsiana’s queries. His duties will largely remain the same although "I am not allowed to handle any cases or appear in court because of potential future conflicts of interest,” he added.
"The pandemic has greatly impacted our court and legal system’s functioning. All courts were closed for a three-week period, except to handle emergency matters. Our courts have now reopened on a limited basis, hearing matters where defendants are in-custody in our local jails, so that we can preserve their constitutional rights to a speedy trial. All court hearings are currently being conducted remotely over video conferencing,” clarified Mody in his email of April 13.
