Madon’s genetics award

Genetics consultant Dr Prochi Madon has been conferred the Prof I. C. Verma Lifetime Achievement Award by the Indian Society of Human Genetics (ISHG) in Madras during its annual conference in February 2020, noted communications from Madon and Dr Firuza Parikh, director of department of assisted reproduction and genetics, Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre. The award was presented by Drs Subhabrata Chakrabarti, secretary, and Moinak Banerjee, president of ISHG. A cytogenetics (the study of human chromosomes) specialist, Madon "set up the genetics laboratory together with Drs Vishwas Sarangdhar and Arundhati Athalye,” notes her curriculum vitae (CV). The team introduced new techniques "for very rapid results of specific abnormalities in different tissues including single cells of embryos.” Madon, who has been with Jaslok for 21 years, runs an outpatients’ department for genetic counseling at the Hospital to guide families with a history of various genetic disorders. She is currently a member of the executive committee of the Board of Genetic Counseling, India. Trained at B. J. Medical College in Poona, the researcher’s CV notes that she set up a genetics laboratory at Sir J. J. Group of Hospitals in 1974 and in S. S. G. Hospital in Baroda.
