Road under the Tower?

By Farrokh Jijina · December 7, 2018

Even before the Bombay High Court ruled in favor of the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (see "No halt for Metro”), activists have raised another bogey: the coastal road tunnel which they allege will pass under the Doongerwadi and disturb the souls of those consigned to the Towers of Silence. A flurry of mostly anonymous WhatsApp messages sought the intervention of the Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP) before it was too late. The mid-day (MD) of November 10, 2018 reported that an unnamed senior civic official told the newspaper that while the tunnel will go under a portion of the Hanging Gardens at Malabar Hill, it is "nowhere near the Tower of Silence.” The news report quoted BPP chairman Yazdi Desai as stating that the tunnel would not be constructed under the Tower of Silence.
The matter "has not come up for discussion informally or formally so far... typically (the) BPP would ask for the opinion of the high priests in this matter,” trustee Noshir Dadrawala told Parsiana on November 26. "Most trustees would think personally that there is no harm. But (some others) would bring up electromagnetic theories and how souls will not reach Chinvat Pul if there is a tunnel below,” he added.
The eight-lane Coastal Road is intended to run along Bombay’s western coastline connecting Marine Lines in the south to Kandivali in the north. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 150 billion (USD 2.1 billion), with a targeted completion date of 2022.
