Priests by pehris?
I have been hearing over the past 50 years that there will be no mobeds left. Fortunately that is unlikely to happen in my lifetime. To resolve the minuscule issue of "mobed nathi malta (cannot find mobeds)” we need to open the mobedi doors to all male children born of two Zoroastrian parents who would genuinely like to become priests and commence the pehri (lineage).
I have tried to rationalize with Zoroastrian priests and scholars as to why a child from a behdin lineage cannot become a priest. I have been told that it has to be by pehri and only if a male child is born into a priest’s or athornan family can the son be initiated as a priest. The girls cannot which is fully understandable due to the monthly menstrual cycle.
I have a cousin and a daughter, both of whom are married to two wonderful gentlemen who are behdins. Both these ladies know precisely, and to perfection, the rituals and reet reevaaj (practices) that should be observed in a priestly household. Both of them would love to have their children initiated as priests but are blocked under the prevailing rules. If they were to get their children initiated as priests it would probably be considered objectionable, this despite the fact that sub-stratification of priests into Bhagarias, Godavras, Bharuchas, Khambatas and Sanjanas was man-made and someone in his wisdom declared that priests can only be by pehri.
We have all been hearing of mobedyars (male and female) and assistant priests in the western world. Yet those in India remain adamant not to open our doors to the child of a behdin who would like to be initiated as a priest. Are behdins not Zoroastrians? We are all Zarathushtis at the end of the day. A behdin is no less important than an athornan to serve the Zarathushti community. NAUZER BANA
