Differences resolved

By Farrokh Jijina · January 21, 2018
At a joint meeting of all the trustees of the Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP) and the chairman and office bearers of The B. D. Petit Parsee General Hospital (PGH) on January 2, 2018, it was unanimously resolved that the trustees of the BPP "unequivocally, firmly and wholeheartedly” support the new secular hospital project being undertaken by the PGH, reads a joint press release dated January 4 from the BPP and the Hospital. Those present at the meeting also expressed their gratitude to Pervin and Jal Shroff of Hong Kong for their "munificent pledge” to donate USD 22.5 million for the new cosmopolitan hospital building, which will be operated by the Dr Naresh Trehan-led Medanta Group.

Both parties (BPP and the PGH) "strongly believe that the latest health care and financial benefits” emanating from the project will "support the continued operations of the Hospital and ensure sustainable and integrated medical facilities for the poor and indigent members of the Parsi Zoroastrian community for years to come,” notes the press release.
The note confirms that the existing Hospital and the new secular one (the new building and the land on which it is constructed) "shall remain at all times the exclusive property of The B. D. Petit Parsee General Hospital.” Medicity of Medanta Group will "professionally manage and operate the new state-of-the-art facility,” the note ends.
The Hospital property is owned by the BPP, some of whose trustees believed they were not adequately briefed about the agreement with Medanta-Medicity. The Hospital’s managing committee had replied that a non-disclosure clause required them to be secretive till the signing. The Shroffs had pledged support to the Hospital with the intention of creating a cosmopolitan hospital from whose anticipated surpluses, the Hospital’s losses could be subsidized (see "Breaking new ground,” Parsiana, Events and Personalities, March 21, 2016).
