Wadia Hospital grant

By Farrokh Jijina · December 21, 2017
According to a report in The Afternoon Despatch and Courier (ADC) of October 26, 2017, the state government’s reluctance to release approximately Rs 50 crores due as grants to the Nowrojee Wadia Maternity Hospital and Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital since 2012 has led to concern among Hospital employees. Prakash Reddy, secretary of the Lal Bawta General Kamgar Union told the newspaper that "the Government is not in a mood to extend financial assistance...even the committee set up in this regard has held only one meeting in the last five years.” Fearing that due to a resource crunch, the trust "will be gradually forced to retrench staff, rope in private parties and increase the charges collected from the patients,” he alleged that "the government wants to stop the grant since it is of the opinion that the Hospital should be treated on par with other Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) hospitals, where the BMC takes care of all expenses.”
The 1929 established Parel based Hospital trust receives 85% of its expenditure as grants from the BMC and the state government. In response to Parsiana’s follow up on December 12 with the Hospital’s chief operating officer Dr Minnie Bodhanwala, she stated that there was no further update since the ADC news item.
