Salgirah in Secunderabad

By Sherene Vakil · October 7, 2016
Dr Putli Lentin Hodiwalla (pictured), well known to the people of Andhra and Telengana as Dr P. M. Lentin, was felicitated by the trustees of the Seth Viccaji Seth Pestonji Meherji Parsi (SVSPMP) Fire Temple on the occasion of the agiary’s 169th salgirah on August 1, 2016 "for all her good deeds and achievements.” She was presented with a bouquet by Capt Kayarmin Pestonji, president of the SVSPMP Fire Temple Trust, a shawl by trustee Cyrus Irani and a memento, the Pestonshahi Sikka, by trustee Farouk Viccajee, notes a write-up sent by Omim Debara, trustee of the Parsi Zoroastrian Anjuman of Secunderabad and Hyderabad.
Putli Aunty, as community members fondly address her, has for over four decades been the family doctor and trusted elder to many. Her kindness to Zoroastrian patients has earned her their love and gratitude. Lentin, who graduated in 1955, completed her MD in general medicine in 1961 from the Osmania Hospital and Medical College. She did her post doctorate MSc in applied nutrition from the National Institute of Nutrition in 1969. Having joined the Nizam’s Government Medical Service in 1956 as its first female physician, she retired in 1988 after 32 years as doctor and professor. Many of her postgraduate students are gold medalists and have become renowned doctors and surgeons, Debara writes.
The SVSPMP Fire Temple, built and consecrated on September 12, 1847, is the oldest fire temple in the twin cities of Secunderabad and Hyderabad. A jashan held in the morning was attended by a large number of community members.
