Losing minority status

By Sherene Vakil · August 7, 2015
"In minority schools, 51% seats are reserved for minority students and they have to compulsorily fill that. If they are unable to do so, those seats should be handed over to the state,” said Eknath Khadse, minister of minority affairs on June 11, 2015, as reported in Daily News and Analysis (DNA) the following day. Claiming that 75 minority educational institutions have violated the prescribed terms and conditions, the state of Maharashtra has issued suspension of minority status notices to schools that have not admitted a single minority student during the past three years.
Among these are 10 schools in south Bombay of which three are Parsi owned/run — the Bai Ratanbai F. Pavri High School at Grant Road, The Bai B. S. Bengallee Girls High School at Churchgate and Dunne’s Institute at Kala Ghoda, notes DNA.
