Excitement at IZA elections

High drama marked the beginning of the Iranian Zoroastrian Anjuman (IZA) general committee elections on September 28, 2014 as the police initially stopped the casting of votes and then relented. Five openings for the Bombay constituency were bagged by Khodadad Irani (117), Sarosh Irani (114), Gaiv Irani (111), Behram Irani (106) and Hemavand Namdarian (98).
Others contesting were Cyrus Irani (80), Meherban Irani (77), Roozbeh Hormuzdiyar (75), Dr Syrus Irani (73), Farrokh Najmi (63), Shapoor Irani (four).
For the constituency of Ahrestan the winner was Aflatoon Irani who received four votes out of six against Flomarz Ahrestani.
An appeal to the Assistant Charity Commissioner (ACC) under section 41A of the Maharashtra Public Trust Act by Benafshay Irani, wife of the former IZA president Mehrwan Irani, was turned down with the ACC stating he had no powers to stay the election under the section. The disgruntled candidates’ subsequent attempt to reportedly have the police stop the elections being held at the Scout Hut on Azad Maidan proved unsuccessful.
