“To ruffle feathers”

By Sherene Vakil · August 7, 2014
With the average age in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 24-member cabinet being 60, Smriti Irani is the youngest at 38, mentioned The Indian Express in its edition of May 27, 2014. Details of the new minister for Human Resource Development’s career were provided by The Economic Times (ET) of the same date which describes it as "a meteoric rise in a career that’s not been short of surprises.”

Smriti Irani: astute politician

From being a former Miss India pageant contender to the most popular daughter-in-law in television serials to the uncertain arena of politics, Irani has proved she is "not just a fighter and hard worker but also an astute politician,” Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers told ET. Irani managed to cut into Rahul Gandhi’s victory margin by more than half in his home constituency of Amethi in the recent elections, the newspaper notes.
Of Bengali-Punjabi origin and married to Zoroastrian industrialist Zubin Irani, the mother of three is seen as an "effective communicator” and widely acknowledged in the BJP as a key member of Modi’s inner circle. "Madam was confident right from the beginning that the Amethi (experience) will reward her sufficiently. She went there to ruffle feathers,” a close associate who organized her campaign there informed ET.
