Fraternization and farewell
Parsiana’s request to the World Zoroastrian Organisation (WZO) chairman Shahpur Captain to share his views ahead of the Congress elicited this response:
"As the community is well aware, the WZO was established in 1980 and since then has given sterling service to the community, starting with helping scores of displaced Zoroastrians from the Middle East region to settle in the western world (still continuing), to commencing and implementing the Gujarat Farmers Upliftment Scheme in India that opened the eyes of the community to the existence of extreme poverty amongst our community members in the rural areas of Gujarat, establishing two senior citizens’ homes in Navsari, extending micro credit to young ambitious Zoroastrians to start their small businesses, etc. In the last five years it has donated over a million pounds to various charities all over the world, bulk of it in India. It would be right to state that no other Zoroastrian organization has done as much as WZO all over the world.
"And yet, since 1984 as far as I remember, certain people in the community, world over, have behaved as if the WZO does not exist. They have simply buried their heads in the sand like proverbial ostriches. It is for this reason that WZO London will be absent from the WZC.
"At the end of this month, very many honorable Zoroastrians will gather in Bombay and some will talk about what they have been doing in their areas like religious ceremonies, interfaith attendances, inviting dignitaries, etc. As usual, none of the burning matters facing the community will be discussed, decided upon or solutions put forward for the community to follow. It will be a case of ‘Hail fellow Zoroastrian and farewell.’
"Is this what the community really needs?”
