Zonta Woman of the Year

By Sherene Vakil · May 7, 2013
The Woman of the Year Award 2013 of the Zonta Club of Bombay III was presented to Dr Nayreen Mozam Daruwalla at the Club’s 34th Charter Anniversary celebration on March 23, 2013 in Bombay. Anita Ramchandran, founder of Cerebrus Consultants and chairperson of Tata TiE Stree Shakti, a forum for women entrepreneurs to create trust-based partnerships through active networking, was chief guest and Annie Grimes, director of the American Information Center, Bombay was the guest of honor, mentions a write-up received by Parsiana from Freny F. Paghdiwala, past president.
Daruwalla, a psychologist, is program director of SHANA, an NGO (non-governmental organization) for the prevention of violence against women and children (see "Champion of gender justice,” Events and Personalities, Parsiana, February 7, 2013). According to her, though the country’s constitution gives women equal rights, they lack equal opportunities. Even after counseling they return to the same atmosphere. What is required for empowerment of women is to change the mindset of both men and women, a change that has to come from within, she maintained, the write-up notes.

The Zonta Club’s Encouragement Award 2013 was presented to Nuzhat Hanif Hamdare of Nuzhat’s Innovations – Hand Beaded Jewelry by Differently Abled Women.
"Women often stop other women from flowering their potential. This is true even in educated families,” mentioned Ramchandran. She felt that often the family of a woman executive needs to be counseled so that she is not deprived of professional opportunities. "There should be an endeavor to make women courageous with self-confidence,” she urged. Grimes revealed that she had great admiration for these extraordinary women and one should work for their and their children’s welfare through the year. She appreciated the support of men to this cause.
The evening ended with dinner.
