Mahuva honors Mogal
A portrait of the late Lt Cdr Firdaus Mogal was unveiled by Ervad (Dr) Rooyintan Peer inside the hall of the Mahuva Dadgah in Surat district on January 26, 2013 in the presence of 200 community members. The Shree Mahuva Parsi Anjuman had passed a resolution to set up this memorial for its martyred son. Mogal had sacrificed his life to save those of six others while on a naval submarine off the coast of Bombay on August 30, 2010, and the President of India had awarded him the Shaurya Chakra posthumously on April 7, 2012, mentions a write-up received from Dr Hosang Mogal, uncle of Firdaus and a trustee of the Anjuman.
Anjuman president Hoshi Bajina welcomed Peer and spoke about the purpose of the morning’s event. This was followed by a humbandagi and a jashan performed by four priests from the Navsari Malesar Behdin Anjuman’s agiary before the portrait was unveiled. The action then shifted to Manekwadi, the community hall of the Anjuman, where Peer explained the significance of supreme bravery. He released a small book in Gujarati and English edited by Hosang about Firdaus titled Bhar Baporé Suryast (Sunset at noon) which the author hoped would inspire the younger generation to do their duty and encourage them to join the country’s defence services, the write-up mentions. Religious scholar Rusi Besania, who presided, consoled the parents of the late Firdaus. Besania and Cmde (Retd) Aspi Marker had also contributed to the book, copies of which were distributed after lunch to all present. The function concluded with the singing of the national anthem.
