Tragedy at Tardeo

By Sherene Vakil · November 7, 2012

The eternal tussle between landlords and tenants in Bombay over building repairs took an unfortunate turn when on September 25, 2012 Homai Bharucha, who was resting in her bedroom on the second floor of Soona Building inside Zoroastrian Colony at Chikalwadi, Tardeo, plunged to her death when the floor slab caved in at about 10 a.m. The floor of her bedroom crashed into the first floor kitchen, which in turn collapsed injuring a domestic worker. Bharucha was rushed to the nearby Bhatia Hospital where she was declared dead on arrival. The 82-year-old had celebrated her birthday just the day before.
The building is one of a cluster of 23 owned and managed by The Zoroastrian Building Fund (ZBF), and though not on the list of cessed buildings declared dangerous by a survey carried out by Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), it was structurally weak.
