“The sound specialist”
I learnt about the passing away of Burjor Mistry on reading "The sound specialist” (In Memoriam, Parsiana, February 21, 2011).
Some people have memories as milestones in their lives. Mistry is a milestone in mine. Between 1977 and 1983, I worked in Qatar. My sponsor was a wealthy Qatari who wanted a "sound specialist” for the music system in his personal swimming pool (!) and gym. And, as was to be expected at the time, he wanted a gora (white skinned person). I told this Qatari person about Mistry’s skills, experience and knowledge. He was sceptical, but finally agreed that I give Mistry a chance.
Mistry designed the system, we got it installed in Doha, and when I asked him to raise a bill for his design he smiled and said, "Nawshir, if your Qatari friend is happy and satisfied that we Indians are as good as any, then that is my fee.”
The system worked perfectly and was the envy of other wealthy business magnates. Whenever they enquired about hiring Mistry, his response was: "Too busy in India.”
I always remember him as a pillar of values that few can ever erect trapped as we are in the acceptance of mediocrity, provided it is socially acceptable.
