Election campaigns

This year the anjumans of Bombay and Ahmedabad have been under suspense as the punchayets are eager for fresh governing bodies with some changes in the system of election. The Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP) is working for the universal adult franchise scheme which has been sanctioned by the court. This will facilitate the Zoroastrians in Bombay to elect a new board of trustees by open voting. The elections will no longer be restricted to a small section of the community.
I am of the opinion that the voice of the anjuman is important for governance by the punchayet. The decision of the people must be the main factor in tackling confusing problems. This will also enhance transparency of the working of the trust.
As usual, some quarters have been raising their voice against the process of universal adult franchise on the grounds that any Laloo Prasad or angutha chhaap (illiterate person) could contest the elections. Such an eventuality can be avoided by mature voters who, with foresight and wise consideration, could elect selfless, devoted akabars with integrity and broad vision who are willing to devote time for welfare activities.
Coincidentally, the Ahmedabad Parsi Panchayat (APP) too has amended its election process, which was confirmed by the charity commissioner. After seven long years the APP held elections in June 2007 for a new managing committee. The previous election had been in 2000. For the first time women could also contest trusteeship elections to the APP. During the campaign, emotions ran high. There was suspense when nominations were called for at a time when 20 persons were away in Iran, some of whom were eager to contest. It was expected that many women would stand. However, only one, Dr Armaity Daver came forward, that too only as a committee member. The campaign was fair and peaceful. The newly elected APP board has raised hopes for better management under the leadership of renowned advocate Kersi Shethna.
Punchayets should behave like families, devoted to a common cause, working amicably, coordinating well with others and avoiding conflicts and differences of opinion. We congratulate the new trustees and managing committee members and offer them full cooperation in their administration.
