Justice Shethna resigns
Justice Behram Jahanbux Shethna of the Gujarat High Court, who landed in a controversy because of his spat with his colleague Justice P. B. Majmudar on January 11, 2007 (“Judicial storm,” Events and Personalities, Parsiana, February 21, 2007), resigned on April 10, 2007.
In his letter to the President of India, Justice Shethna reportedly
said that he was shocked by his transfer to Sikkim and claimed that he was being “victimized for exposing corruption in the higher
judiciary.” Shethna had earlier passed orders against judges hearing
cases in which their close relatives were lawyers. These lawyers were getting maximum number of cases because the affected parties felt it would bring them favorable decisions, he said, as per a report in The Times of India of April 11, 2007.
