Interfaith marriages rise to 36% in 2003
Interfaith marriages in the community rose by five percent in 2003 over 2002’s figures of 31 percent. This is amongst the highest increases recorded.
The statistics from 1989 onwards show that while the number of Parsis marrying in Bombay has been declining sharply from a high of 383 to 193 in 2003, a drop of 190 marriages, interfaith marriages on the other hand almost doubled from 62 in 1989 to 110 in 2003. The percentage rise is almost three times with 13.9 percent marrying out in 1989 and 36.3 in 2003.
As the community numbers continue to decline so do the number of deaths in a year. In 1989 1,001 Parsi deaths were recorded while in 2003 the number is 886. This means an average of 2.42 deaths per day took place in 2003 as versus 2.77, 14 years ago.
No authoritative figure is available for births but we may assume they are less than 300 per year.
The data on Parsi marriages obtained from the Bombay High Court is published every month while the data on interfaith marriages obtained from the offices of the Registrar of Marriages in Fort and Bandra is carried twice a year.
Parsiana thanks subscriber Dr Keki Hathi for his suggestion to carry graphs and pie charts to highlight the statistics.
